New Year Reset: Why Montessori Kids Don’t Get Homework, and What They Do Instead

As kids return from winter break, many families brace for the nightly homework battles. But at Mid Cape Montessori, you won’t find worksheets in backpacks. Why?

We believe that home is for rest, family, and real-life learning.
Instead of homework, we encourage:
Practical life tasks. Cooking, cleaning, planning the next day. These are all valuable learning experiences that build independence.
Interest-based exploration. If your child wants to build Lego towns or read animal books after school, that’s learning too.
Evening reflection. Our students use work plans during the day to track and reflect on their progress. At home, this looks like journaling, storytelling, or simply talking about their day.
Montessori kids don’t stop learning when they leave the classroom. They just learn differently.
This approach fosters a lifelong love of learning, rather than short-term memorization. When school and home are both environments of trust and autonomy, children feel more invested in their growth. They become self-driven, curious thinkers. Traits that serve them far beyond test scores or homework deadlines.
